Within the next three years, in 2011, Juan joined an agency that specialized in providing Adaptive Skills Training (AST) services to children and adolescents with developmental disabilities. In the next five years, during his time providing AST services, Juan learned to implement programs that focus on community integration, safety skills, and/or daily living skills. Soon after, Juan was promoted to Case Manager of teams across the San Fernando Valley, where he was in charge of training staff, creating individualized programs for consumers, and providing parent training. Today Juan manages the Administrative Operations at ICAN-B, he is in charge of the Scheduling, Payroll, HR, and Claims departments, all while attending an ABA graduate program.”

What is ABA?
What is ABA? What is Applied Behavior Analysis:
Applied Behavior Analysis is the science of human behavior. The field studies human behaviors by examining the relationships between behaviors and variables in the environments. These causal relationships give us information on why certain behaviors are occurring and how to change these behaviors if necessary.
Why Applied Behavior Analysis?
There are numerous reasons as to why one should use the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis when it comes to teaching skills and changing behaviors:
- Extensive research evidence to support ABA-based interventions
- Take control of behaviors when the “cause” is in the environment
- Each person is unique; thus, each intervention/program is tailored for each person
- Data driven
- Progress is observable through the use of objective measurement systems
- Constant adjustments are made to each program to fit the person’s need
What is BCBA and BCBA-D?
BCBA stands for Board Certified Behavior Analyst and BCBA-D stands for Board Certified Behavior Analyst-Doctoral Level. In order to obtain the certifications, an individual will have to meet a set of requirements created by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). BACB was orginally formed in 1998 and it is a credentialing body for the field of behavior analysis. You can think of it as Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in the accounting field. BCBA is equivalent to that but in the ABA field. Although competenecies and exprtises vary among BCBAs, the certification informs you that this person has at least 1500 clinical hours in applying ABA concepts and strategies. Thus, when parents are looking for an ABA and autism service provider, it is a must to ensure that the organiztion has at least one BCBA on the staff roster to oversee their therapy and programs.
What are the current requirements to become a BCBA-D and BCBA?
BCBA-D:
- Doctorate degree in psychology, applied behavior analysis, education, or a related field.
- Completed 1500 clinical hours.
- Passed BCBA exam.
BCBA:
- Master’s degree in psychology, applied behavior analysis, education, or a related field.
- Completed 1500 clinical hours.
- Passed BCBA exam.
Differences between BCBA and BCBA-D?
The responsibilities of BCBA and BCBA-D are the same:
- Provide BCBA supervision.
- Conduct Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA).
- Conduct Functional Analysis (FA).
- Develop and supervise implementation of behavior-analytic programs.
- Monitor and modify behavior analytic programs.
- Provide direct ABA services to students.
- Understand, maintain and follow BACB ethical guidelines.
The main difference between BCBA and BCBA-D is their educational level. A BCBA-D must have a doctorate degree in ABA or related field. This usually implies that the person has a solid foundation and understandings of the basic ABA concepts & principles, and an experienced practitioner (most of the time) in working with individuals with developmental disabilities.

We also utilize different ABA based behaviour reduction techniques to manage their socially inappropriate behaviors.
Other factors that separate ICan-B with other providers:
1. The entire ICan-B Asia’s clinical team is led by the only Chinese speaking BCBA-D in Hong Kong.

This is to ensure our quality of services is maintained at its highest level and your child’s program is up-to-date.
5. You child is unique and so is the program developed by our senior clinicians. Throughout the entire therapy process, our clinicians will continuously assess your child’s needs and skill levels. This is to ensure the ABA program developed for your child is individualized and cater to him or her needs.
6. Clinical meeting will be held monthly by our clinicians to update you on your child’s progress and answer any question or concern that you might have.
7. Passionate yet scientific. Our clinicians love to work with their clients yet everything we do at ICan-B is evidence-based and driven by data.
8. One of the goals of our therapy is to bridge the gap of your child’s functional age and chronological age so he or she can have a meaningful life and be successful in the world.
